Essays should be written in a five-paragraph format organized as follows:
  • Paragraph 1 contains an introduction to the problem or issue, a statement of the thesis or main idea to be proved, and an outline of topics to be discussed.
  • Paragraph 2 to 4.  Each is an exploration of one topic pertaining to the thesis.  These paragraphs should contain factual information.
  • Paragraph 5 is a conclusion that summarizes the evidence, states a conclusion, and comments upon the importance of the findings.
 Marks will be assigned as follows:
  • 2 marks for the introduction
  • 12 marks for the body, particularly relevant details of content
  • 2 marks for the conclusion
  • 2 marks for the quality of argument in support of the thesis
  • 2 marks for form, clarity and mechanics
